Click here to review/comment on Star Trek 2.Ever since news of a sequel to Star Trek was announced, the rumour mill has continually been awash with speculation as to the identity of the villain in Star Trek 2.
When Benecio Del Toro was attached to the project, it was assumed that he would be playing the genetically engineered despot Khan, until Benedict Cumberbatch signed on to replace him, and the whole thing was blown wide open again.
Now TrekMovie claims to have an inside source who can confirm that Cumberbatch will be playing Khan after all. Originally played by Ricardo Montalban, Khan Noonien Singh is an exiled war monger bearing a nasty grudge against Starfleet.
Having already served as the primary antagonist in Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan, Khan first popped up in the episode Space Seed, although TrekMovie claims that the new film will not just be a rehash of that existing origin story.
Meanwhile, Leonard Nimoy will also make an appearance in the sequel as Spock Prime. "I enjoy conversations with JJ Abrams and Zachary Quinto," said Nimoy via his Twitter account. "Keeping up on their work. They are my friends. LLAP." Source: www.totalfilm.com
Star Trek 2 has finally bagged itself a villain, and we're delighted to reveal that it's none other than Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch!
For months it had seemed as though Benicio Del Toro would be cast in J.J. Abrams' sequel, but the Puerto Rican actor reportedly passed on the opportunity over a pay dispute.
Now the door has swung open for Cumberbatch, who has seized upon what is surely the biggest role of his career to date. Combined with his vocal role as Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit, it seems as though his place on Hollywood's A-list is all but confirmed.
As for who he might play, details have yet to be released at this point. Khan Noonien Singh, the villain originally played by Ricardo Montalban, was the hot favourite when Del Toro was attached, and we don't see why that would necessarily have changed now Cumberbatch is in place.
In any case, it's great to see the multi-talented Cumberbatch get a chance to shine in a Hollywood blockbuster, and we can't wait to see him bring his signature brand of icy detachment to the Star Trek universe.
He'll also be joined on set by another British actor in the form of Noel Clarke, who has also signed on for an as-yet unnamed role. Details are scarce at present, but Variety reports that Clarke will play "a family man with a wife and young daughter." Hmm, who fancies his chance of survival then? Source: www.totalfilm.com
J.J. Abrams has revealed that his upcoming Star Trek sequel will not shoot in 3D but will instead favour the post-production treatment. However, before alarm bells start ringing, Abrams is quick to reassure fans that the 3D element will not be a rush job...
"We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie," Abrams told MTV. "Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good."
Indeed it doesn't, although more encouraging is Abrams newfound interest in using IMAX cameras for part of the shoot.
"We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it," revealed Abrams. "IMAX is my favourite format. I'm a huge fan."
However, those fantasising about seeing William Shatner on a screen the size of a building (we know you're out there) will be disappointed, as a studio insider has confirmed that no members of the original cast will be making cameos. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Benicio Del Toro has reportedly turned down the opportunity to star in J.J. Abrams Star Trek 2, after failing to agree terms with Paramount. But although it might be back to the drawing board in terms of casting the villain, we do now know who that villain is going to be.
Vulture reports from an inside source that the part Del Toro turned down was that of Khan Noonien Singh, the villain initially played by Ricardo Montalban in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.
A genetically engineered human tyrant, Khan cropped up in the TV episode Space Seed before being brought back for the first big-screen sequel, where he sought vengeance on Kirk for exiling him on the barren planet Ceti Alpha V.
Regardless of whether you are a fan of the character or not, he did seem a good fit for Del Toro, who would have brought a daunting physical presence to the role, as well as some genuine A-list star power.
Abrams has at least swelled his cast with other additions over the past week, with Alice Eve and Peter Weller recently signing on the dotted line. As for who plays Khan, let the speculation commence! Star Trek 2 is released in the US on 17 May 2013. Source: www.totalfilm.com
In a piece of casting news likely to induce nerdgasms the world over, Variety reports that Robocop star Peter Weller has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek sequel.
Weller is the latest star to join the cast, following in the footsteps of Alice Eve, who was added to the existing ensemble last week. The news comes in the wake of a new casting twist, in which Abrams has put a question mark over the involvement of Benicio Del Toro.
Latino Review recently published a story confirming that Del Toro had officially signed on to play the villainous Khan, only for Abrams to come out and contradict the news as "not true".
That might not necessarily mean that Del Toro isn't involved however, as Abrams could merely have been writing off Khan as a possible villain. In any case, Del Toro has yet to be officially confirmed, as has the identity of the film's key antagonist.
As for Weller's character, we don't have any details as present, which means that we're not writing off the possibility of him actually playing Robocop. We can dream, can't we? Source: www.totalfilm.com
Alice Eve is the latest actress to be beamed up to join the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2.
The British actress, best known for her roles Stateside in Sex And The City 2 and She's Out Of My League, will play a brand new character to the franchise.
No details have been announced as to whether she will be friend or foe to the the inhabitants of the USS Enterprise, though it is likely she will be playing someone "familiar to Trekkies" according to "insiders".
Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are all on board to reprise their roles in the sci-fi sequel with filming expected to be kicking off early next year. Intriguingly, there's said to be another older villain - who'll play second fiddle to Benicio Del Toro - yet to be cast.
Alice Eve can next be seen in The Raven alongside Luke Evans and John Cusack. That one's due to hit the cinemas in March. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Thanks to, well, Thanksgiving, one could say that film news has slowed down to a minuscule drip this weekend.
Or, you could use the overindulgence in roast turkey and all the trimmings to appreciate the kind of news that might have been swept under the carpet on busier days.
News like the fact Michael Giacchino will return to compose the music for Star Trek 2, having done a bang-up job first time round.
Speaking to ComingSoon, Giacchino confirmed, "Yes, I'll be back... I'll be there as soon as they finish it."
Oscar-winner Giacchino has flourished the baton for some of the most memorable movie scores of recent years, including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Let Me In, and Up (for which he took home the Academy Award). Source: www.totalfilm.com
After much dithering, Star Trek 2 is finally gathering some pace.
And it feels like it's now shifting up a further gear, with the report that JJ Abrams is about to offer the lead villain role to Benicio Del Toro.
The usually reliable Variety has gleaned this info from 'sources close to the the project,' but unsurprisingly for a JJ movie, details are being kept tightly under wraps.
Things have been a little quite for Del Toro recently, with his last memorable role occurring in 2008's Che two-parter (we're blocking The Wolfman from our memories), but he has recently finished work on Oliver Stone's Savages.
It'd be great to see Del Toro on 'big bad' duties for what's guaranteed to be a huge event picture, as he has the right blend of feral intensity and menacing charisma.
