He'll star opposite Benjamin Walker as the vamp-busting president and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the first lady, as well as fellow Brit Dominic Cooper who's playing Abe's mentor.
Sewell has a rich history of playing caddish villains, in the likes of A Knight's Tale, The Legend of Zorro, The Illusionist and, er, The Holiday.
The actor also gained a little American history experience with a small role in HBO's superior drama series, John Adams.
His casting comes fairly late in the day, as director Timur Bekmambetov has already started shooting the historical fantasy, with an eye to a summer 2012 release.
The film is based on Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling novel, which reimagines vampirism as the primary cause behind the Civil War. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Trent Reznor is currently in talks to take a role in Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, as well as supplying the movie's score.
The Nine Inch Nails frontman has recently become one of the hottest musical properties in Hollywood, following his score for The Social Network (with Atticus Ross), that saw him pick up an Oscar last weekend.
Bekmambetov's historical fantasy is shaping up to be bags of fun, and sounding like it could just live up to its awesome title.
Reznor is in negotiations to play Jack Barts, a vampire who kills Abraham Lincoln's mother, giving the hero an incentive to start stocking up on stakes and garlic.
It's not yet clear if his role will be more major villain or fun cameo.
Benjamin Walker is playing Abe, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Mary Todd, his first lady.
The Tim Burton-produced movie, based on Seth Grahame-Smith's novel, is set for a summer 2012 release.
Reznor and Ross will also be providing the music for David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Robin McLeavy has been cast in Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as Mary Todd, the titular hero's love interest and future wife.
Something of a film newbie, McLeavy's biggest credit to date is 2009's decently-reviewed Aussie high school horror The Loved Ones.
The actress graduated with a degree in Performing Arts from Australia's National Institute Of Dramatic Art in 2004.
Other confirmed casting includes Benjamin Walker as Lincoln himself, Anthony Mackie as his buddy Will, and Dominic Cooper as mentor Harry.
Bekmambetov appears to be favouring lesser-known actors for his adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel, which should offer the film a fresh, dangerous edge.

Joaquin Phoenix took a time out from Hollywood for a couple of years in order to play an off-the-rails version of himself in mock-doc I'm Still Here.
Now that that's all over and done with, the actor's contemplating how he's going to bounce back into movieland.
And what better way to do it than with the awesome-sounding Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?
The film's currently being set up by producer Tim Burton and director Timur Bekmambetov, and Phoenix has been offered the role of Henry, a mythic figure who helps transform the 16th US president into a killer of the undead.
Deadline report that the role is Phoenix's for the taking. If he decides to grab it, he'll be joining the recently-cast Benjamin Walker (who'll play Lincoln) in the adap of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Six actors have been lined up to be screen tested for the adaptation of history-skewing horror Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
As 20th Century Fox scour the globe for a chap who can pull off the role of the 16th US President (as a demon fighter), the studio have asked six actors to come in and audition.
Those actors are Adrien Brody, Timothy Olyphant, Josh Lucas, James D'Arcy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Benjamin Walker.
Though none are particularly well-known for having big bushy beards and a penchant for bow ties, they're all pretty tried and true when it comes to action films ? clearly a deal breaking quality for the studio.
Vampire Hunter is being adapted into a 3D movie by Night Watch and Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov, based on Seth Grahame-Smith's novel of the same name. Tim Burton is producing.
The plot twists history, reimagining Lincoln as a secret vampire hunter looking to avenge the death of his mother.
Who'll get the gig? Too soon to tell, though surely Lucas would most resemble Lincoln if given a beard and a funny voice. Source: www.totalfilm.com
