The British actor will take on the role of Quatto, the enigmatic and charming leader of the resistance. In the 1990 original, the resistance is based on Mars.
Not so in director Len Wiseman's new adaptation of Phillip K Dick's story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, which will feature a number of differences to the original Arnie actioner.
Meanwhile, Wiseman's wife Kate Beckinsale has officially landed the lead role of Lori, while Jessica Biel will play the second female lead Melina.

Ethan Hawke has joined Colin Farrell in the remake of 1990's Total Recall.
Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, the original film followed a man who, yearning to travel to Mars but unable to afford it, buys a memory implant from a company called Rekall Inc.
Problems ensue when he begins to believe he is actually a real secret agent sent to a Martian colony.
Picked up by Columbia Pictures in 2009, this version will ditch the alien storyline, focusing instead on Douglas Quaid (Farrell) as a factory worker who believes he is a spy for nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, although he doesn't know where his loyalties lie.
It's not known what part Hawke has bagged yet as his cameo role is being kept a secret. The Gattaca actor has recently just finished shooting a Fox studios pilot called Exit Strategy.

Kate Beckinsale has been offered the role of Lori in Sony Pictures' Total Recall remake, according to Deadline.
This news shouldn't come as a huge shock, as Beckinsale is married to remake director Len Wiseman, and they've previously worked together on several Underworld movies.
Only scheduling problems could keep her away from Recall, as she's currently busy shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn (and it'd probably lead to some awkward dinner table moments if she just turned her hubbie down?)
If she signs on, she'll star opposite Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid (the character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original).
Lori (formerly played by Sharon Stone) is Quaid's wife, though like most things in the Philip K. Dick-inspired movie, she's not all she seems.
There's still another major female role to be cast: Mars-based freedom fighter Melina.
Deadline are reporting that Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are serious contenders for the role, though it's still not clear if either of them will actually get an offer.
Total Recall also has Bryan Cranston onboard as villain Vilos Cohaagen, and it's scheduled for release on 22 August 2012. Source: www.totalfilm.com
Total Recall has just received a hefty injection of cool with the casting of Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston.
The reboot ? which is being helmed by Underworld's Len Wiseman ? has landed Emmy-winning Cranston as the film's main villain and foil to Colin Farrell's hero.
Heat Vision have the plot for the movie, which reveals that Cranston will play Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of nation state Euromerica, who is secretly preparing to invade New Shanghai.
Meanwhile, Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a factory worker in New Shanghai who starts to wonder if he's really a spy.
No mention of Mars yet, but this plot sounds suitably different from the Arnie version, though with a consistent thread involving spies and the suppression of certain peoples.

With Total Recall getting ready to re-enter cinemas next summer, casting for the reboot has kicked up a notch.
Colin Farrell has been confirmed as the movie's Arnie replacement, so director Len Wiseman has now set his sights on a collection of young actresses who this week are reading for two of the lead female roles.
Quaid's wife Lori (originally played by Sharon Stone in the 1990 Arnie film) and feisty Mars resident Melinda (Rachel Ticotin) are both in need of casting.
According to Deadline, a number of big name actresses are reading for both roles, including Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger for Lori, and Eva Mendes, Paula Patton, Jessica Biel and Eva Green for Melinda.
Frail Bosworth and generally-meek Kruger seem like odd choices, considering both Lori and Melinda are considerable ball-busters.
Mendes we can definitely see as Melinda, but Lori demands an actress who can pull off both the conniving and physical aspects of the character. More when we get it... Source: www.totalfilm.com
