Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark survived the horrors of Hunger Games against all odds, now living what seems to be their new, rich, peaceful lives in district 12's victor village. Katniss struggles with her feelings for Gale and Peeta, as well as severe problems with a new head peacekeeper and his squad. But the government of the Capitol is not pleased with Katniss and her performance as the star-crossed lover, claiming that her behavior in the arena may result in an uprising from the districts and, in turn, a new war, with her being the face of it all. President Snow gives her and an unknowing Peeta the chance to fix this during the victor's tour - a parade through all the districts where the victors get to show themselves to the crowds. Furthermore, as almost a whole year has passed, the 75th annual Hunger Games reaping - this year being the third Quarter Quell - comes with a heart-breaking surprise for Katniss and her fellow district 12 victors.

In the wake of Gary Ross's abrupt departure, the studio has had to move quickly to find a replacement, with filming scheduled to begin in August ahead of a November 2013 release date.
Their list of candidates was apparently whittled down to a final pair, with Moneyball director Bennett Miller reportedly considered before an offer was made to Lawrence.
One of the factors behind that decision may well have been Miller's availability, given that he is currently prepping Steve Carell drama Foxcatcher ahead of a December start.
Should Lawrence accept the offer, he'll find himself thrown into a ludicrously tight production schedule, with filming having to start in a matter of months in order to ensure Jennifer Lawrence is able to shoot the X-Men: First Class sequel in January.
Time constraints were what eventually led Ross to step down from his position, with the director doubting his ability to live up to the first film under such tight margins. Let's hope Lawrence can pull it out of the bag, should he accept the opportunity...

There are some bullish announcements being made in Hollywood right now. Last weekend saw Sony announce a release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and now Lionsgate have repeated the trick by announcing the arrival of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire on 22 November 2013.
Bearing in mind the first film hasn't even finished shooting, it's a confident move on the part of the studio, although given the huge popularity of the books, they're probably reasoning their built-in audience will turn out for the sequel regardless of how well the original is received.
Lionsgate COO Joe Drake gave an accompanying statement hyping up the studio's excitement in the project with the usual PR flannel.
"The magical thing about the The Hunger Games trilogy is that the books have such a vastly broad appeal," he burbles. "The stories truly offer something for everyone, and the period around the Thanksgiving weekend is an opportunity for families and friends to make an event of going to the movies."
The first film, simply entitled The Hunger Games, will arrive on 23 March next year, with filming soon set to wrap on the Jennifer Lawrence-starring adventure. Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland are just some of the big names set to flesh out an exciting supporting cast.
The trilogy is set in a post-apocalyptic version of America, in which the ruling government selects a boy and girl from each of the country's districts to participate in a brutal survival event known as The Hunger Games.
No word as yet on the future of director Gary Ross, and one suspects that, had Lionsgate decided to retain him for part two, they probably would have announced it. Better make this one count then Gary? no pressure. Source: www.totalfilm.com
