Cinema Jenin

Release Date: Sunday 13th May 2012. Founded in the 1960's, Cinema Jenin was once the largest cinema in the Palestinian territories. It was closed as a movie theatre with the outbreak of the first Intifada in 1987. Fakhri Hammad, a citizen of Jenin, and Ismael Khateeb, from the citys refugee camp, are bringing the old cinema back to life together with a group of enthusiastic locals and foreigners. The story behind this ambitious plan began when in 2005 Ishmael Khateeb decided to donate the organs of his 11 year-old son Ahmed, who was shot dead by the Israeli army. Despite his grief, Ishmael decided that Israeli children should receive these organs, thus saving their lives. A year later, still deeply affected by his son's death, he opened a culture centre for the children of the camp as an alternative for their street life. The idea to rebuild the cinema was born! The film takes us on an intimate, nuanced and textured journey of a dedicated and often conflicted group of people who hope that the rebuilding of the cinema will be a bridge to peace, education and Palestinian self-empowerment.

What happens when an industry has too much power? "Greedy Lying Bastards" presents a searing indictment of the influence, deceit and corruption that defines the fossil fuel industry. From the Gulf Coast to the tiny nation of Tuvalu, from Nigeria and Uganda to Peru and Alaska, filmmaker and political activist Craig Rosebraugh documents the impact of an industry that has continually put profits before people, waged a campaign of lies designed to thwart measures to combat climate change, used its clout to minimize infringing regulations and undermined the political process in the U.S. and abroad. This in-depth investigation into the industry spanned five continents and nine countries. "Greedy Lying Bastards" is the disturbing and revealing portrait of what was uncovered on this journey, a tale of devastating consequences. By interweaving the stories of the victims of the Gulf oil spill and the global climate crisis with a look at the practices of fossil fuel companies and the climate change deniers they support, the film lays bare the industry's deliberate pattern of irresponsibility.

THE CITY DARK chronicles the disappearance of darkness. When filmmaker Ian Cheney moves to New York City and discovers skies almost completely devoid of stars, a simple question - what do we lose, when we lost the night? - spawns a journey to America's brightest and darkest corners. Astronomers, cancer researchers, ecologists and philosophers provide glimpses of what is lost in the glare of city lights; blending a humorous, searching tone with poetic footage of the night sky, what unravels is an introduction to the science of the dark, and an exploration of the human relationship to the stars.

The delightful portrait of the multifaceted Ken Sykora: jazz musician, radio broadcaster and chef. Deeply inspired by Django Reinhardt, Ken's musical career was cut short by the second world war and then rock 'n' roll. He moved into broadcasting where he worked on more than 3000 programmes over 4 decades. At the peak of his popularity in the early 70s he suddenly and unexpectedly quit the BBC, moving his wife and young family from Suffolk to Scotland, to run a hotel, in 'the middle of nowhere'. With exclusive access to Ken's extensive archive, we present his life story for the first time and uncover rare recordings of his musical performances not heard for more than 50 years. Ken Sykora is a forgotten talent to discover.

Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building's lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Miya Masaoka uses music to interact with plants and insects; Jon Rose turns fences into musical instruments with a violin bow in conflict zones ranging from the Australian outback to Israel; John Luther Adams translates geophysical phenomena in Alaska into music; and Bob Ostertag explores socio-political issues through processes as diverse as transcribing riots into string quartets, and creating live cinema with garbage. By contrasting the creative paths of these artists, and a connection between them by the world renowned Kronos Quartet, the film explores music not as a form of entertainment, career, or even self-expression, but as a tool to develop more deeply meaningful relationships with people and the complexities of the world they live in.

My mother used to wake me up with a vinyl record. It's the first thing I remember about life. Many years have passed but vinyl records have never abandoned me. And you? Have you ever listened to a vinyl record? With its unique sound and crackling that gives you butterflies. Have you ever plunged into the colours of the sleeves artwork? Have you smelled it? Music captures a unique taste, seductive. In "Vinylmania" the director guides us through the grooves of an object that has never lost its soul. He investigates what makes it so legendary in a world dominated by liquid music: Simple nostalgia? Possession? The search for an idenitity? A cry against the fast food music? The digital river that has no heart or soul, just ones and zeros... From Tokyo to New York, London, Paris and Prague we meet a tribe of collectors, DJs, musicians and artists. We explore the stores where passion is transformed into fever and the factories that have resumed stamping millions of copies. Vinyl records are back.
