Neil Burger will direct Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune [8th July 2011 08:28:32]

Limitless and The Illusionist director Neil Burger has signed on to helm the big screen adaptation of video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Director David O Russell (The Fighter) left the project earlier this year over creative differences with Sony - he wanted to use the game's basic premise and create an entirely different story for the film.

Now, Burger will both write and direct the film, with Variety reporting that "producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner sparked to [Burger's] new take" on the concept.

Following adventurer Nathan Drake, the game of Uncharted sees the intrepid explorer seeking out the lost treasure of El Dorado. It's not certain yet if the movie will follow the same storyline.

Fans of the game were up in arms when it was announced that Mark Wahlberg would play Drake, arguing that cult favourite Nathan Fillion was more suited to the role.

Time will tell if Burger agrees and ditches Wahlberg, or if he gives his Limitless buddy Bradley Cooper a call and offers him the role instead. Source: www.totalfilm.com

Uncharted adap loses director David O Russell [27th May 2011 08:05:20]

Mark Wahlberg and David O Russell won't be teaming up for videogame adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Instead, the pair has decided to make a different adaptation together ? this one a movie version of the novel The Silver Livings Playbook.
Wahlberg will play a delusional ex-teacher who has just spent four years in a mental asylum. When he's released into his mother's care, he attempts to woo back his ex-wife.

Russell signed on to the film a couple of weeks back, which means his departure from Uncharted isn't massively unexpected ? though it is surprising considering how excited he was about the film.

At present, Wahlberg is still attached to star in Uncharted as the titular Nathan Drake. But considering he also has a whole host of projects currently demanding his time, it wouldn't be a surprise if he dropped Uncharted as well.

Sony has now hired a new writer for the videogame adaptation, and is pushing forward with the project. Source: www.totalfilm.com

David O. Russell addresses Uncharted adap concerns [21st February 2011 10:31:11]

Ever since David O. Russell was confirmed as the director of video game adap Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the web's been going wild.

All the gamers have an opinion about the movie ? who should be in it, how it should be done, what the plot should involve.

Now, Slash Film have caught up with Russell - who's been nominated for a Best Director Oscar for The Fighter this year ? to hear what he has to say about the film.

"I started to brew together what I thought could be a really cool idea that I'd never seen in a film before," he says. "Really intense action and really intense family dynamics on a global stage.

"To grow a game into a movie is an interesting proposition because a game is a very different experience than a movie. You guys are playing the game, and it's about playing the game.

"It's not about a narrative embracing you emotionally. You know what I'm saying? So, I want to create a world that is worthy of a really great film that people want to watch and rewatch, so that's what I'm working on right now."
All we can say is: good luck. Source: www.totalfilm.com
