Paco is a 11 years-old boy nicknamed Pakete after failing five penalty kicks in five games consecutively who lives in the town of Soto Alto with his parents, patrol police Emilio and antiquarian/passionate soccer lover Juana, and with his teen older brother Víctor. Member of the Soto Alto's school soccer team with his friends Camuñas, Tomeo, Marilyn, Angustias, Ocho, Toni and Anita, and trained by the good-intention but incompetent coaches Felipe and Alicia, Pakete's life worsen after his classroom partner and beauty neighbor Helena (who secretly is Pakete's love interest) joins to the team: Laura, Anita's mother and school's vice-principal, hates the soccer and she wants undo the team to change it by a child chorus if the team downgrades to a lower category; in addition, Helena's parents are filing for divorce and if the team misses, Helena's father will get the custody and take her away. Trying to win the remaining soccer games to save the situation, in one of them the referee fall.

At the outbreak of the Second Congo War, Rwandan soldiers Sergeant Xavier and Private Faustin are sent to hunt down Hutu rebels in the vast jungles of eastern Congo. Xavier is a stoic veteran of the ethnic wars that have plagued his country for years. Faustin is an eager young recruit who joined the army to avenge the death of his father and brothers. Under the relentless command of Major Kayitare, they march eighty kilometers a day in pursuit of the murderers of nearly one million Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide four years ago. One night, Xavier and Faustin are accidentally left behind when the battalion races out to chase fleeing rebels. They try to catch up, but must take refuge in the forest when local Congolese militiamen catch sight of them. Lost, with no hope of catching their men, they decide to press west through the jungle toward Kasai Province where Xavier believes the Major is headed next. It will not be easy. In the last war, Xavier saw hundreds die in the jungle.

Today these mining communities face severe poverty and the world's greatest epidemic of silicosis and tuberculosis caused by exposure to silica dust in gold mines. The true cost of South Africa's wealth is revealed by the juxta-positioning of present day gold miner stories with an archival voice created from state and mining records and repurposed industrial documentaries and propaganda films. The archival voice further reveals the untold story of how industrialised South Africa was built on a foundation of modern slavery based on a vast system of recruitment that utilized propaganda films since the early 1900's. Dying for Gold is also a story of mad love that holds men, women and children through experiences of unspeakable pain and death.
